Laura's Past Appearances

June 13th - 15th, 2008 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Aspen, Colorado
I am thrilled to once again be leading the cheese seminars at this crème de la crème of events. This year, I'll be showcasing American Raw Milk cheeses in one seminar and in my seminar with wine guy extraordinaire, Brian Duncan, from Chicago's Bin 36 and A Mano restaurants,
I'll be doing Old World and New World cheese pairs. Brian will feature Old World and New World wines to go along with 'em. This year, the Classic will be 26 years old old, and you can be sure that the folks at American Express publishing who put this extravaganza on have got it down. It's a weekend of lots and lots of wine, great food, and camaraderie, but as much as anything it celebrates Food & Wine Magazine's "Best New Chefs" for 2008. It's a treat to be in the company of these great new chefs who represent the now and the future of American cooking. Even if you can't come this year, reserve your spot for next year. You'll be so happy you did.

May 22, 2008 1pm Bloomingdale's, Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto
I've been lucky enough to be teamed up with fantastic cookware company All-Clad and the ever popular Bloomingdale's department store to be part of "Cooktech with All-Clad." That means that on this day at this hour, every Bloomingdale's demo kitchen across the country will be featuring my recipe for All American Cheese Strata, which is from my book, Laura Werlin's Cheese Essentials. I'll be demonstrating it myself for Palo Alto attendees. As an added Palo Alto bonus, I'll take everyone through a tasting of the eight styles of cheese as outlined in my book. Understanding those eight styles is the key to understanding every cheese in the cheese aisle and cheese store. Afterward, I'll be staying around to answer your cheese questions and sign books for you and your cheese-loving friends and family.

May 16, 2008 1:30pm Paso Robles Inn, Paso Robles
What better way to kick off the annual Paso Robles Wine Festival than with a cheese and wine pairing? If you're planning to attend the Festival, come early on Friday and get in the mood for the fabulous Central Coast wines with these special pairings. I'll be featuring American cheeses and pairing them with the wines from Treana, Liberty School, and Austin Hope. All three wineries make excellent wines, each in their own styles, and all true to the terroir of the region. The cheeses, including one from the iconic Cowgirl Creamery, pretty much speak for themselves. In a word, they're delicious.
For info about the pairing, call 805-238-6979 x 217. Cost is $35.00.
For info about the Festival, check out their website: www.pasowine.com/events/winefestival.php

April 12, 2008 3pm Copperfield's Books, Napa
Join me at this magnificent independent bookstore as I take attendees through the Cheese Essentials. We will taste and learn about the eight styles of cheese by way of fantastic cheeses generously donated by the Napa Whole Foods store. March 14th - 16th 4th Annual Oregon Cheese Guild Festival, Central Point, Oregon
If you're excited about all the great cheeses being made in America, then Oregon should be at the top of your list of cheeses to experience. The cheeses that are being produced in that state are nothing short of spectacular. Lots of original cheeses and a genuine understanding by the cheesemakers of how to make great cheese and make it their own is contributing to the impressive landscape of Oregon cheese. This cheese festival celebrates Oregon at its finest. If last year was any indication, this year's extravaganza is sure to be a winning combination of cheese tasting, cheese talk, cheese information, and old-fashioned fun. But that's not all. Other artisans will be there too, including a chocolate maker, wine producers, and craft brewmasters.

March 7th - 9th 2nd Annual Artisan Cheese Festival, Petaluma, California
Last year saw the launch of this rare consumer-focused cheese festival, and it was hands-down a smash hit. Get ready for round two of the festival, which promises to be bigger and better. Lots of cheese tasting, cheese seminars, cheese and wine pairings, chef cheese demos, you name it. If it has to do with cheese, it'll be at this Festival. The spectacular cheeses will be primarily from California, Oregon, and Washington. In most cases, the producers of those cheeses will be on hand for you to talk to and learn from. Other local artisans will be there too. After all, this is Sonoma County, best known for its fantastic wine (that'll be here too), but also honey producers, bread bakers, and more. This is definitely a don't-miss event if you love cheese. Buy your tickets early. The Festival sold out last year.

March 4th - 6th 6th Annual Cheesemaking Opportunities and Challenges Conference, Sonoma, California
If you're thinking about becoming a cheesemaker or are simply an enthusiast hungering for detailed information about cheese (not to mention tasting a few), then this conference will appeal to you. Panelists run the gamut from academics to cheesemakers to journalists to authors (yep, me too), cheese retailers, distributors, and all the people responsible for either bringing cheese and/or cheese information to the consumer. Each day has a different focus, but the common link is, of course, cheese. Check the site for further details as they become available.

This event has picked up steam each year since it began a few short years ago, and now as it enters its fourth year this food and wine extravaganza is sure to be the best one yet. 60 chefs and 30 gourmet food companies create the enticing food portion of the weekend through tastings and classes and over 700 wines will be poured at the many special events including the Reserve Tasting, the Grand Tasting Event, and the many wonderful seminars throughout the weekend. I'll be hosting a seminar of my own on, what else? cheese. I'll take attendees through a focused tasting of the eight different styles of cheese to help demystify the entire world of cheese. I'll also have a couple of wines on hand so that everyone can learn the basics of cheese and wine pairing with very little effort and a whole lot of fun. November 5, 2007 Whole Foods Culinary Center, 6:30 - 8:30pm, Austin, Texas
I'm thrilled to be able to return to this amazing culinary center smack dab in the middle of Whole Foods' flagship store. There's nothing like Austin, which in addition to its legendary music reputation, has some great food and most of all food lovers. At this class, I will take attendees through a tasting of the eight basic styles of cheese, explaining how those eight styles are the key to understanding all cheeses. In addition, we'll go on a cheese and wine pairing journey with those eight styles so that no one will have to wonder what cheeses to buy nor what to serve them with ever again.

It'll be a veritable cheese extravaganza, featuring the magnificent Haystack goat cheeses and also a beautiful array of California cheeses as well. Come eat cheese, meet your fellow cheese fans, and say hello to the goat dairy folks as well as to yours truly. I will be signing books but mostly I'll be just like you - taking in the splendor of a great dairy and some amazing cheeses.

October 26 - 28, 2007 -- Kohler Food and Wine Experience, Kohler, Wisconsin
One of the most beautiful resorts and spas in the midwest, The American Club, plays host for the seventh year in a row to one of the best food and wine events all year -- the Kohler Food & Wine Experience. I absolutely love this event and know you will too, so come on up to this easy-to-get-to world class resort (it's about an hour from Milwaukee) and taste cheese at one or both of my seminars, and enjoy lots and lots of wine throughout the weekend. (If you like golf, you'll be happy to know that one of the courses at Kohler, Whistling Straits, was the site of the Senior Open in July). This year, I have been teamed up with the inimitable Anthony Giglio for a cheese and wine seminar, so come prepared to be entertained not to mention feted with great cheese and wine. This year's theme: Spanish and Portuguese cheeses and wines. For my solo cheese seminar, I'll be taking attendees through a tasting of the eight styles of cheese, where we will not only learn why knowing those styles are important but we'll also get to taste some darned good cheeses.

October 25, 2007, 5pm - 7pm, West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe, Milwaukee Public Market
For the first time, I will have the opportunity to teach Milwaukee folks (and beyond) about cheese. Kind of coals to Newcastle, that is, teaching Wisconsin folks about cheese, but even they are curious about Cheese Essentials too. I'll be showcasing some of Wisconsin's best cheeses (delicious!) along with wines from around the United States. Please sign up if you're in the Milwaukee area.

October 24, 2007, 5pm to 7pm, Fromagination, Madison, Wisconsin
You'd think that Madison would have had a cheese shop devoted to the spectacular cheeses being made in Wisconsin and the rest of the United States and world, but it hadn't happened until now. Ken Monteleone has done it by opening Fromagination, a store dedicated to cheese artisans and others who handcraft their product and celebrate the art of making, not just the art of eating. They're also the go-to people for pairings with cheese, whether wine, beer, olives - you name it. I can't wait to see the store first-hand, where I'll be toasting to Ken and his "imagination," (get it? Fromagination, imagination? okay, I'll stop), and signing a few books too. Please stop by and see this newest paean to cheese.

October 20, 2007 -- DeGustibus Cooking School at Macy's, Macy's Herald Square, New York City
There are many special places to teach classes about cheese, but few rank as high as DeGustibus Cooking School. Come join me for an afternoon of cheese education in the Big Apple (how appropriate for a cheese class, no?) and lots and lots of cheese tasting. By the end, you will be able to walk into Whole Foods, down to Murray's Cheese Shop, up to Fairway Market, Zabar's, or any place you buy cheese throughout the country or even the world, and identify the general flavors in all the cheeses you see even if you've never tasted them before. Sounds too good to be true? Come see.

Come to "EnoVersity," at oENOlogy, Chicago's newest paean to wine, cheese (and chocolate!), where resident sommelier Laurel Sandberg and I will team up to teach cheese and wine pairing. Naturally, we'll be featuring some pretty extraordinary cheeses and wines in the elegant wine cellar-like setting. Located in the downtown Hotel InterContinental, this class is sure to be fun and educational, not to mention a great place to learn about cheese and wine. Class is only an hour, so plan to stay afterward for more cheese, wine, and chocolate fun.

October 8, 2007, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, The Cheese School of San Francisco
Get ready for round three of the all American cheese and wine pairing class. This time, though, we'll get into the nitty gritty of how you can choose cheeses on your own, American and otherwise, and of course, we'll talk (and taste) cheeses and wines and learn how to put them all together.

October 3, 2007 Beecher's Handmade Cheese, 6:30 - 9:00pm, Seattle, Washington
Few places are as exciting to teach as Beecher's Handmade Cheese. First of all, Beecher's make the award-winning Beecher's Flagship cheese and Flagship Reserve cheese. The Reserve just got first-runner up in the American Cheese Society annual competition. Not bad for a competition boasting 1,200 cheeses. More than that, Beecher's, located at the famous Pike Place Market, has become a must-visit for any cheese loving Seattle visitor because of the magnificent array of cheeses sold there as well as the opportunity to watch them make cheese through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Their nearby classroom is a perfect place to impart all kinds of cheese information, which is what I'll be doing this evening. Join me for my two-hour class where I'll be teaching "cheese essentials" through an extensive tasting followed by a cheese and wine pairing journey in which you will get even more cheese paired with Pacific Northwest wines.

September 30, 2007, 12pm to 6pm - Out and About Rockridge, Oakland, California
For several years, Rockridge Market Hall - that magnificent food emporium in Oakland's Rockridge District - has been hosting the Market Hall Street Fair and Picnic. They're doing it again, only the entire Rockridge District Association has gotten involved. That means that from noon until 6, College Avenue will be blocked off between Claremont Avenue and Lawton to make room for abundant food offerings, three performance stages, several craft booths, and well, because this is northern California, a healing tent too. Just as in previous years, local cookbook authors will be on hand to sign their books, and lucky for me, I'm one of them. Come say hi between 1:30 and 3pm. But if it's just food you're after, you'll find the Market Hall merchants clustered around the 5600 block of College, just south of Shafter.

September 26 - 30 -- Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta
If you like wine; if you like cheese; if you like good food; and if you have always wanted to see Santa Fe, do NOT miss this spectacular event. The Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is unquestionably one of my favorite events all year, and I know that executive director, Greg O'Byrne, has some amazing things in store for this, the Fiesta's 17th year. I'll be doing a cheese and wine seminar with wine man extraordinaire, Tim Gaiser. This year, "Say Sí to Spanish and Portuguese Cheeses and Wines" on Wednesday, September 26th. There, I'll take attendees through "cheese essentials" and will also impart guidelines for pairing cheese and wine through tasting. Saturday is the always-fun Grand Tasting, where New Mexico chefs try and out-do each other with some of the best eats I've ever had at this type of event.

September 21 - 24, 2007 -- Cheese!
This is Slow Food International's must-see-to-believe bi-annual event held in Bra, Italy. The entire town of Bra is taken over by cheese from all over the world. The seminars are packed with cheese-and information-hungry people, and the atmosphere of the entire event is one of excitement and revelry. If you love cheese, do NOT miss this event. It's the best excuse you'll ever have to go to Italy and to the town that not only knows how to celebrate cheese but is also the gateway to arguably the world's best wine region, the Piemonte.

September 13 - 15. 2007 -- Traverse Epicurean Classic, Traverse City, Michigan
I will join many of my fellow foodies in one of the most beautiful parts of the country for the fourth annual Traverse Epicurean Classic. Billed as "A Celebration of Wine & Food Artisanship," the Traverse Epicurean Classic is just in its fourth year, but it's an event that is fast becoming a hot food and wine destination. I can think of no place I'd rather give a cheese and wine seminar, which is, of course, what I'll be doing. No doubt, a few products from the local area will appear at my seminar, and I'm not just talking cheese. This part of Michigan is known for all types of fruit, including special cherries, to name just one. Mark your calendar and plan your trip now.

Once again, I'm thanking my lucky stars to be part of this fantastic event, held in my favorite above sea level city. This year is Food & Wine magazine's 25th anniversary in Aspen, so the Classic promises to be even more spectacular than ever before (if that's possible).

This year, I will be joined by Brian Duncan, wine director at Chicago's fantastic Bin 36 restaurant (www.bin36.com), for The Cheese Course seminars, being held at 2pm on Friday and Saturday. I'll continue with the cheese theme in a couple of solo stints featuring "The World's Best Cheeses." These will be held at 3:30pm on Friday and Saturday, following The Cheese Course seminars.
